Work-Based Learning

Work-based learning encompasses formal and informal programs involving learning in the workplace or simulated activities that provide learners with the opportunity to:

  • acquire and demonstrate general employability skills
  • acquire an understanding of the changing nature of work and workplaces
  • acquire an understanding of the changing patterns of employment in industries in which there is likely to be a significant labour growth.

The Requirements and Guidelines for Work-based Learning delivered to school students was endorsed by the Years 9 to 12 Steering Committee in February 2021.

*Department of Education (DoE) staff coordinating work placement should still refer to the Workplace Learning Policy and the Workplace Learning Procedure on the DoE staff intranet that are current but under review. Staff working in Catholic and Independent Schools should refer to their own sector policies and procedures.

Consultation on this and associated documents was undertaken with schools, as well as education, training and industry stakeholders, throughout 2020.

Supporting resources and professional learning to assist with implementation are being developed and will be provided to schools.

The Requirements and Guidelines provides guidance and parameters around the delivery and provision of work-based learning to school students.
